Dear Praying Christian Friends,
On Friday, January 30, we were able to leave for my second trip to Port-au-Prince,
Haiti, since the disastrous earthquake of January 12th. We had quickly formed a group of
Independent Baptist missionaries to minister to the people of Haiti through the local
Independent Baptist churches established there. This group includes Baptist Bible Fellowship Missionaries Wesley Lane,
Tom Franklin, and Susan Perkins, Global Faith missionary John Webb,
Daystar Baptist missionaries Gary Hale and Chad Justice, as well as BIMI missionaries Mike Doering,
Steve Brockell and Jeff Garrison, and IBFI missionaries Ron and Kathy Valerio. We convoyed over in
three vehicles loaded with camp supplies and items for donation. When we arrived, we set up camp
in Missionary Leny Funtecha’s churchyard. Six American missionaries and some Dominican and
Haitian church members went in with us on this trip.
We were able to work with over 20 different Baptist churches.
These are the churches that worked directly with me in Haiti and with Philippine Missionary Leny Funtecha,
as well as with other Baptist missionaries dating back to former BBFI Missionary Dewey Harris (deceased),
late Missionaries Mel Kirk and George Leslie Baker, and even late BEMA missionary Edgar Shreve who
passed on about twenty years ago.
We were able to distribute over 12,000 meals, dozens of tents and tarps,
thousands of bottles of water, 1,000 water purification systems, 250 hygiene kits,
50 emergency care kits and an entire pallet of clothing, plus diapers, toilet paper, women’s products and candles.
We also gave direct cash support to several Haitian pastors who continue to be in dire need.
We were able to preach in several of these churches and saw five people come to Christ.
We also worked to assess the needs of these churches and the houses of the different pastors.
We surveyed the buildings for structural damages and are trying to develop a plan to rebuild,
repair or demolish these structures, planning to share the work load and expense between several missionaries
while preserving the independent nature of these churches and pastors.
Dr. Nesbitt worked 10-12 hour days to provide medical care for the many wounded and was able to
supply thousands of dollars of medicine, surgery equipment, and other medical supplies to two area clinics.
We have a warehouse with armed guards to dispatch supplies from and we are doing our distribution through
the Baptist churches in the Port-au-Prince area. We still have quite a few churches and pastors' homes to
inspect and evaluate before the assessment is over. We are sharing information and cooperating together to
make this relief/rebuilding effort a success.
This work will continue in the upcoming months as we are making plans to return with more supplies and continue
what we have begun. The biggest need that we currently have is for more tents and more tarps for
more durable shelters as the rains begin. If you wish to donate these or other items you can send them via
our Florida address
and please include $1.50 per pound for shipping cost.
There will be a need in the future for construction teams and medical teams.
